“In 1904, Federated Insurance was founded in southern Minnesota by an implement dealer association as a member benefit for business owners seeking more affordable fire insurance tailored to meet the needs of their industry. In the following decades of consistent growth, we expanded to provide property coverage for auto dealers, petroleum marketers, and contractors throughout the Midwest.
By mid-century, we became one of the nation’s first multiline insurance companies with our expansion into casualty coverage. We continued growing by entering into group health insurance (which we no longer offer), life insurance, and business succession assistance.
By the end of the 20th century, began offering estate planning through an independent network of attorneys and were among the largest mutual insurance companies in the nation. We continue to strengthen ourselves and the businesses we insure with our experience, knowledge, industry-specific lines of coverage, and industry-leading risk management services; including the acquisition of Granite Re to better provide surety bonding for contractor industries.
Federated was founded out of a need to fill a gap in the industry. From that singular directive has grown one of the country’s superior insurers today. If you ask us what we do, we say “sell insurance”. If you ask us why we do what we do, we say “to help our clients be the best they can be”.
